Day Book bound in tooled and gilt sueded leather with protective parchment at the four corners, pages sewn into binding. On the inside cover is written in pencil “Joseph Stepheson/Milton, Delaware/May 12,1954” First page first entry is John Roach, March 30, 1859; on the 7th page the pages begin to be numbered sequentially, beginning with 1; with this page #1 the heading “Smith’s Mills” also begins, with a beginning date of February 16, 1859. Thereafter the pages are numbered sequentially, with the same page number on the left and right pages, to page 248, dated June 25th, 1862. After a number of blank pages, the last seven pages are also used but withoutthe Smith’s Mills heading and in inconsistent chronological order. These entries date from 1860 and 1861. Smith’s Mills appears to be a general grocery and merchandise store. The book includes local family names.
